Drawing on memories of growing up near the sea on the Isle of Wight and with a magpie tendency to collect stones and rocks, Frances creates ceramic works that have simple forms with complex surfaces.

The work is usually hand built using traditional pottery techniques like coiling, often burnished with a pebble as it dries and then smoke fired in sawdust, where an element of chance takes over, making every piece unique.

She is interested in the effects of time, hidden layers, where scratching the surface can reveal a new picture.
